Bunny George Discovers a Message
Chapter Three
Gordie introduced Bunny George
To his brothers and sisters
All their names begin with G
Geraldine and Grace and Garibaldi.
They took him to all their favourite places
Their yummy clover patch, their hideaway
Their secret path around the lake.
They pointed to the Ballerina Barn
And the Castle full of chickens.
Garibaldi took him down their rabbit hole.
It was very dark and George didn’t like it.
He was happy to climb back out.
Gordie took him to the greenhouses where
He discovered that George could read big words.
Chrysanthemums, Geraniums, and
Please Turn off the tap.
Geraldine and Grace took him to
Their ballet class where
They were learning to twirl.
He climbed on top of the piano
To watch them twirl across the room
Perfectly in time
To the music.
By sunset he was so tired
He just wanted to sleep on his own pillow.
He found it near the Swan’s nest down by the lake.
He curled up and listened to the crickets.
Bunny George had never slept outside.
The big sky was full of stars.
A full moon reflected in the still surface of the lake.
Everything was peaceful.
He fell asleep.
Early in the morning he heard a twig snap.
Bunny’s ears went up.
Along the path came Katerina the Ballerina
She sat down beside the Swan.
They whispered for a long time.
Then Katerina clearly said
“You want me to write that message?”
The Swan honked yes.
“You want me to throw it to the castle?”
The Swan honked yes.
The ballerina stood up.
She wound up and
Pitched the golden egg
Way up high over the lake.
Bunny George was dumbfounded.
He shot straight up in the air
In one powerful leap.
He flew in a perfect curve up over the water
He caught the egg with both paws.
He clutched it to his furry front.
Then he looked down.
“Oh oh.”
He fell in the lake without dropping the egg.
There were lily pads.
The water was not too deep.
There was a muddy bottom.
A big turtle came up beside him.
“Nice catch.
Climb aboard. I’ll take you to shore.”
As they made their way to shore
Bunny George gently rubbed the egg
To dry it off.
“Hey guess what?”, he said to the turtle.
“The gold is coming off.”
“Of course. There is no such thing as a golden egg.”
Bunny George had to think about that.
“And I see a message written on it.”
When they reached the shore
George thanked the turtle for saving him.
They sat together in the sun.
George deciphered the message…..
SAVE ME PLEASE
